In 30 minutes, you'll know:

The weird bit

There's no slope.
There's a cliff.

Funded childcare isn't scaled to what you earn. You either qualify or you don't. Go one pound over the line and it stops the same day — and it's measured on one parent, not your household.

Paying more into your pension moves the income that counts back this way

An illustration, not advice. Children aged 3 and 4 keep the universal 15 hours whatever you earn — it's everything above that, and every hour for a younger child, that stops. The same income test applies to Tax-Free Childcare, worth up to £2,000 a child a year. England only; Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland run separate schemes.

The fixable bit

Every £1 you put into a personal pension takes £1.25 off the figure that's being tested. Salary sacrifice does it a different way again. Jessica shows you which one applies to you, and where the catches are.
